Residents unite to highlight dangers of living by busy road
CONCERNED Arundel residents took part in a halloween-themed walk to show their support for the Ford Road Action Group.
The group wants to ban HGVs from using Ford Road, which connects Arundel with Ford and Climping, and have the 30mph speed limit enforced.
Participants walked a short distance along the road to show their anger at the dangers posed to them on a daily basis by increasing volume and speeds of vehicles using the road.
"Ford Road residents and neighbours are sick of having to tolerate the increasing number of HGVs that choose to take this route against county council advice and motorists who show a blatant disregard for pedestrians' safety by driving at excessive speeds along what is a largely residential road," said Sarah Engerran, Ford Road homeowner and FRAG publicity co-ordinator.
The Pumpkin Crossing took walkers along Ford Road from Warwick Court to Arundel Fire Station, where a Speed Indicator Device (SID) was situated to inform drivers of their speeds.
In the hour the device operated, it was estimated 15 per cent of passing vehicles were exceeding the 30mph limit.
Ford Road is an unclassified road – not an A or B grade road. At the Arundel end there are no footpaths along one section with narrow footpaths in some places and no formal pedestrian crossing.
The road is deemed by the county council to be unsuitable for HGVs.
