Riders set to raise cash
A FAMILY charity in Petersfield is hoping to receive a financial boost from next month's Ups and Downs bike ride.
Homestart Butser has entered a team of cyclists into two of the rides at the event, which takes place on July 12.
The charity hopes to attract even more riders for its team so it can raise enough cash to increase the number of volunteers it trains.
Organiser Nicola Winter said: "At the moment we have got 12 riders, and we are hoping to push it up to 20. We rode it last year for the first time and people really enjoyed the event. It bonds the community together."
Mrs Winter said she was hoping to draft in elite riders David Winter, Simon Hughes and Brian Truman to join her squad, who will either cycle the 26-mile or 15-mile ride.
Homestart Butser is a charity which sends trained volunteers out to help parents who need extra help and support for many different things.
Mrs Winter said: "We are a local charity based in Petersfield which supports families with at least one child under five years old.
"The key to it is helping these families help themselves. It might be that the family are hesitant about joining a local group, so volunteers will help support them there. Or if a family is struggling taking four young children shopping, we will help them, or we can just offer advice and support.
"Many families don't have an extended family surrounding them, so it can be isolating for parents."
Her team is a mixture of volunteers, family and friends of all different cycling abilities. She added: "I'm looking forward to the ride – you meet people, you bump into people you know or cycle past them. It is a lovely day."
