School safety zone is already on council agenda
A SCHOOL safety zone outside Rumboldswhke Infants School is one of a number of road safety improvements on the card in Chichester.
The plan to introduce a 20mph speed limit for residential roads in the city will also be given priority by West Sussex county councillors at a meeting next week if a recommendation from officers is accepted.
The move is subject to the outcome of public consultation, and would cover the city’s residential roads in the first instance, excluding A and B roads.
‘20’s Plenty’ campaigners put the case for the limit at a meeting of the county’s south Chichester county local committee on November 1 last year, when a 3,000-signature petition was presented to chairman Cllr Mike Hall. Committee members are meeting again next Tuesday, and will be asked to highlight highways and transport improvement priorities in an ‘infrastructure plan’ for the area.
A report said the aim at this stage was to identify the priorities.
Proposed improvements were primarily associated with crossing facilities, cycling facilities, new footways, safer routes to school schemes and safety zones, traffic signals, traffic management and town/village improvement schemes.
Proposed priorities included the introduction of 20’s Plenty, subject to public consultation within the city, and its introduction, again subject to consultation, in various settlements across the committee’s area, with Prinsted, Southbourne and Birdham among them.
Other suggested priority schemes include:
- Traffic management improvements to College Lane / Spitalfield lane including drainage improvements
- Bus stop improvements in the city centre, with provision of new shelters
- A route safety scheme from Eartham Lane (A285) to Duncton Hill
- School safety zones/safer routes to school – Rumboldswhyke Infants School and West Dean Primary School (phase two)
- Footway improvement at Blackboy Lane/Clay Lane, Fishbourne
- Cycle link: Winterbourne Road to Graylingwell.
Committee chairman Mike Hall said: “If agreed the public consultation will be carried out as part of the Traffic Regulation Order later this summer.”
If given the go-ahead, up to £30,000 of section 106 money, the fund provided by housing developers to support improvements, will be used to pay for a public consultation as part of a Traffic Regulation Order.
The committee’s meeting takes place on February 21, at the Selsey Centre, Manor Road, Selsey, at 7pm.
