Scouts bury time capsules in public garden
Sweet wrappers, supermarket receipts and Pokemon cards have been left all over a public garden in Petersfield – but litter louts are not to blame...
The items are contained in time capsules which have been buried by Petersfield Cubs as part of an anniversary project.
They were asked to suggest things which might give citizens of the future an impression of Petersfield in 2008.
After sealing them carefully in boxes, the Cubs buried them on formerly overgrown land at the corner of Tor Way and College Street which has been tidied up, planted with shrubs and flowers, and named the Charlie Dickins Garden in memory of a former Scout leader.
The project is being carried out to mark 1st Petersfield Scout Group’s 100th anniversary.
Cub leader Melanie Robinson said: “The boys were asked to bring in things about themselves or Petersfield which they thought would be of interest in 25 years time. They included things such as photos of themselves, Tesco receipts, car park tickets, Pokemon cards,
TV listings, football cards, chocolate wrappers, stamps and recent articles from the PetersfieldPost.
“In addition to burying these, we also tidied up the summer planting and put in some winter bedding plants and bulbs, including bluebells under the trees, so it should make a lovely show in the spring.
“We will be doing another session over the coming month or so as we have some bare-root as part of a Woodland Trust scheme for community projects.”
l Charlie Dickins was a local dentist who started as a Scoutmaster in Petersfield in 1911 and was involved with the Scout movement until his death in 1962.
