A LEASE-holder is battling to rid a collapsed drain of raw sewage.

Richard Rose, who lives in Lavant, leases a Hyde Martlet house in Henry Close, Chichester, to tenants.

But sewage is coming up through the drain and into the garden of the Chichester property.

“We’ve had enough now,” said Mr Rose. “The sewage drain seems to have collapsed, but we are not getting answers.”

Mr Rose has even paid to have a survey done by an independent company, which found cracks in the drain.

He approached both Southern Water and housing association Hyde Martlet for answers. “Hyde Martlet are saying it is Southern Water and they are saying it’s Hyde,” he said.

A Southern Water spokesman said: “We have carried out a CCTV survey of the sewer which has confirmed that the pipe has collapsed within the property boundary.

“This means the property owner is responsible for the pipe and any required repair.”

A spokeswoman for Hyde Martlet said: “We have sent our specialist contractors out to unblock the pipeline on several occasions. However, Southern Water has now taken responsibility for sending out their own contractor to unblock the line and to carry out some investigation into the cause of the blockage to establish who can rectify the problem.”
