Shoreham bar's two-week booze ban

A CAFÉ-bar will lose its alcohol licence for two weeks this summer after police found evidence of Class A drug use, under-age drinking and violence.

The Angel, in East Street, Shoreham, will lose its alcohol licence for 14 days from Sunday, August 9.

Sussex Police had applied for the review because of a "systematic failure" to promote the licensing objectives.

Cocaine

Michael Webb, the licensing officer acting on behalf of the police, listed a series of incidents at the caf-bar, including the stabbing of 32-year-old Jamie Standing, on March 27 this year, and a failed alcohol test-purchase.

The application listed two occasions when positive tests for cocaine had been taken from the toilets, including the baby-changer in the women's toilets.

Mr Webb also mentioned complaints from people living in the area about noise, people urinating in the churchyard of St Mary's Church, and petty vandalism.

Pubwatch

Licensee Andrew Freeman agreed to the suspension during a meeting with Sussex Police and Adur District Council's environmental health department.

His licence had been due to be reviewed by the council's licensing sub-committee on Monday, June 22.

Mr Freeman also agreed to a list of conditions which will be added to his licence.

They included having a registered door supervisor from 8pm until 30 minutes after closing time on Friday and Saturday nights and New Year's Eve, participating in Pubwatch schemes, operating a Challenge 25 policy.

Court case

Kostadin Strezov, of Queen's Place, Shoreham, is due to appear at Chichester Crown Court on Thursday, July 2, charged with grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon in relation to the attack on Mr Standing.
