THE notion that nature is cruel is often contested by philosophers and environmentalists.

But the fate of a flock of six cygnets on Fishbourne Pond is undoubtedly sad – as none of the newly-hatched birds have survived.

Fishbourne resident Brigitte Allen had been watching the birds’ progress.
“I am sad to announce all cygnets have become part of the food chain,” she said. “It is so sad to lose them all, especially as they had seemingly become quite an attraction to people of all ages, but particularly children. Once again it brings home the reality of animal life.”
