Six more could be banned from town
Six more yobs are likely to be banned from Bognor Regis town centre. Police officers are working on obtaining anti social behaviour orders against the individuals.
They hope the legal action will be completed in the coming weeks.
Sergeant Craig Wilkie, who helps to police Bognor town centre, said: “These are people who we are being called to every single day of the week.
“They are having an impact on the wider community.
“If we feel an Asbo is necessary, and it is manageable for us, we will target them.”
He said he was confident the police could enforce Asbos for a group of people.
The orders will be sought when the individuals attend court for various offences.
If they are convicted, the police will ask for the Asbos to be added to their sentences.
This is a different approach to community Asbos which are obtained through work with other organisations, such as Arun District Council.
The news of the crackdown on abusive, offensive and threatening behaviour was revealed as the posters and leaflets naming and shaming Duncan McDonald as the first person to be barred from central Bognor were distributed.
The 100 posters and 300 leaflets have been handed to businesses and residential properties around the town centre.
They urge people to report McDonald (19), of no fixed address, if they see him within an area bounded by Sea Road, Nyewood Lane, Hawthorn Road and Chichester Road.
As well as the ban – which lasts until November 19, 2010 – McDonald is also subject to a series of restrictions on his behaviour around West and East Sussex.
They include not drinking in public, causing harassment and distress to others as well as meeting five other men. Breaking any of the conditions imposed by magistrates will see McDonald back in court.
He said: “It is unusual for a ban to be so wide-ranging but McDonald was causing problems in all the area.
“It was general drunkenness and anti-social behaviour over several months. A lot of it was based in and outside McDonalds in the High Street.”
The police have worked closely with Arun District Council’s anti-social behaviour team for months to serve McDonald with the ASBO.
The council’s anti-social behaviour co-ordinator, Angela Hibbin, said: “Anti-social behaviour can make people’s lives a misery.
“But taking this kind of strong action against it should help demonstrate that it will not go unpunished.”
Cllr Roger Elkins, who is in charge of Arun’s community safety policies, said the posters and leaflets would enable the public to play a role alongside the police in ensuring the ASBO was maintained.
