Tributes to Chichester harbour master

Tributes have been made following the death of the manager and harbour master of Chichester Harbour John Davis.

Lieutenant Colonel Davis, 63, had been out on his beloved boat Fleury on Saturday when he died from a suspected heart attack.

Described as an 'inspirational leader' by colleagues at Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Mr Davis was a well-known figure in the community.

Appointed as harbour master and manager in July 1997, Lt Col Davis worked tirelessly for Chichester Harbour and it was a place that was much loved by both he and his family.

He was awarded the OBE in 2005 for his services to sailing and the environment.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy said that it was with 'great sadness' that it announced his death.

Acting harbour master Richard Craven said: "We are devastated by the sudden loss of John Davis, both a friend and colleague.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.'

John is survived by his wife Valerie and two children Ben and Becky.
