POLICE are now examining a lorry they have stopped on the Chichester bypass, which they believe may have been involved in a fatal incident in Midhurst.
A pedestrian has been hit by a car in Midhurst and North Street is now closed, with traffic being diverted around the town.
Eye witnesses say an elderly lady was killed as she crossed North Street today (July 9).
She was hit by a lorry and dragged some 50 or 60 yards up the street, to the junction with Knockhundred Row.
The centre of Midhurst is completely closed and police say the road will remain closed for some time.
Stagecoach bus services 1, 60, 70 and 71 are subject to lengthy delays.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Emergency services were called to the scene in North Street at 11.13am.
“The road is closed at the A272/A286 junctions to the south and the north of the incident.
“An investigation is under way and the road is likely to remain closed into the afternoon.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Cairo or email firstname.lastname@example.org.”
