ROADS are still closed through the centre of Midhurst as police continue their investigations into the fatal accident shortly after 11am today (Wednesday July 9)

Schoolchildren leaving Midhurst Rother College who would normally have walked up North Street, have been escorted along The Causeway and into Church Hill to avoid the scene of the accident.

Police say the A272 through the centre of the town is likely to remain closed until at least 7pm tonight.

The town came to a standstill this morning when an elderly woman was killed after she tried to cross North Street.

In front of scores of screaming shoppers she was dragged some 60 yards up the road after being struck by a lorry.

Paramedics rushed to the scene by helicopter but were unable to save her.

Most shops in North Street closed after the accident and have remained closed for the day.

A lorry thought to have been involved in the accident has been stopped by police on the Chichester bypass.
