THE six people who were arrested in a lorry in Chichester on suspicion of illegally entering the UK were from Eritrea in Africa.
Six men, three aged 24 and the others aged 23, 28 and 29, were arrested and remained in custody on Wednesday morning (January 19), where they will be interviewed by UK Border Agency officers.
Sussex Police made the arrests yesterday afternoon after they received reports of the men travelling in the back of the lorry.
The driver stopped the Italian registered vehicle at Tangmere on the A27 at 12.42pm for food, where burger van owner John McClelland heard banging from the inside of the lorry.
Concerned that the lorry might be refrigerated, officers moved quickly to get the people out and a rolling road block was put in place on the A27 while this happened in case any attempted to run when released from the vehicle.
The westbound carriageway was closed for around half-an-hour.
