VIDEO: Left cursing our bad luck...
The famous curse of Cowdray Ruins failed to live up to its billing when I spent a night with a paranormal activity group delving into the history of the ancient monument.
Part one of our look into the spiritual world took place at the Observer offices in Chichester last week with mixed results.
And on Saturday I spent the evening at Cowdray in Midhurst with paranormal activity group Paranormal 1968, which is based in Bognor Regis.
It is said a curse was put on the family living there at the time in 1538 by a monk who stormed into the main dining hall and declared the family would be killed off by fire and water, which several hundred years later they were.
Originally built in 1520, the castle was mostly destroyed by a fire in 1793. Within the same week the eighth viscount drowned while on holiday in Germany.
With various stories about what has been seen at the Ruins it seemed like a good place to investigate, although the cold weather was not ideal for being outside late at night.
After a tour of the Ruins, we carried out two co-ordinated seances with no luck.
Then we split into small groups, each looking at different sections, and calling out for any spirits to show themselves.
It proved to be a disappointing night. Only one spooky instance occurred in Buck Hall. There was a sudden rise in temperature, to around five degrees celsius, and then a drop to minus five degrees celsius, which you could clearly feel.
At exactly the same time as the temperature fell, the wind changed from a howling wind t o complete calm.
It seemed a strange coincidence as a chilling wind would normally bring with it a colder temperature, but the opposite occurred as when the wind died, the temperature dropped.
Around the same time as the wind had stopped there was a strong smell of summery flowers in the air which came and went. Unexplained smells can also be a sign of spiritual activity.
After splitting up the group gathered for a call-out in the old wine cellar, with no real results, apart from a tapping noise coming from the corner of the room, sometimes when prompted.
Most of the interest centred around the gatehouse which is where a grey lady has been seen floating by the first-floor window. Unfortunately we had no luck in spotting her.
It has to be remembered you need to be in the right place at the right time to spot these things.
Luck, I'm afraid, did not seem to be on our side.
