VIDEO: Archaeological excavations around Chichester's city walls
Archaeological excavations in Chichester are slowly unearthing the secrets of the City Walls – and experts hope to discover why a room was dug into a Roman tower once used to protect the city.
This weekend, as part of the month-long excavations, people are invited to take a peep into the past during an open day at the site.
Volunteers and archaeologists have been digging up areas at Westgate Fields, adjacent to the walls, to help discover more about the city's rich heritage.
George Anelay, heritage outreach officer at Chichester District Council, is leading the excavation.
He said: "We are exploring the walls and the remains of towers or bastions and ditches that would have surrounded the walls.
"Two main trenches have been dug. One is to look at the remains and foundations of a Roman tower that used to be in place and to look at original Roman stones still visible in a portion of the wall.
"Another trench has been made to examine the ditches that were used for defensive purposes."
A particular area of interest is a secret space similar to a room which at some point was hollowed out within the Roman tower.
George added: "We are not sure why it was done, but as we excavate further down to find the original floor we might get some ideas as to why they did it."
During Saturday's open day between 10am and 4pm, visitors will get a chance to see the excavations in progress and learn more about the discoveries being made.
A selection of items found so far will also be on display.
There will also be workshops in Roman mosaics, medieval timber framing and wall painting. All activities will be free and suitable for all ages.
Cllr Nick Thomas, district council portfolio holder for culture and sport, said: "More than 120 local volunteers have been involved in this project, helping process the finds and hunt for evidence of the environment around the City Walls. It has been a wonderful time for all involved."
The excavation is due to finish on Friday, October 30, when the area will be returned to normal. Until this date, a short guided tour of the site is given each day at 4.15pm.
The excavations are part of a three-year City Walls project which will include repairs to damaged sections, improving access and community celebration events.
