VIDEO: Selsey flood devastation update and more pictures

The storms wreaked havoc at Selsey.

This was the scene when Dee Caldwell of the Ham Residents' Group surveyed the shoreline at 7.25pm yesterday evening (Monday, March 11).

He said: "I have just been down the beach to check out the flooding issues, and it's not looking good at all.

"The shingle bank has but been wiped out to the west of the Embassy Club. My photo does not show it well, but I can see at least 100 devastated caravans, and extensive flooding.

"The rife is full and overtopping to the west, for the first time in 48 years.

"The tide is out at present, but it's coming back for another attack in six hours. If the wind gets behind the tide, it's going to be a massive disaster.

"Not much is being done by the Environment Agency with regard to getting bulldozers in action."

There is still a flood warning along coastal areas from Chichester Harbour to Selsey Bill.

The latest news from the Environment Agency is that a large part of the West Sands Caravan Park in Selsey is under water and two properties are unsafe.

Parts of the shingle beach protecting the caravan park were eroded because of the severe weather and high tides, leading to extensive flooding on the park.

Environment Agency teams used bulldozers to shore up the shingle beach after high winds and waves battered the coast last night.

Environment Agency regional strategy manager, Simon Hughes said:

"We hope that we have seen the most severe weather and tides now although the continuing high winds mean that it will be several days before the risk of flooding subsides.

"We would encourage anyone who is asked to evacuate their property to listen to that advice and stay away until they are given the all clear that it is safe to return."
