Well done, Miss! Head wins prestigious award

There was a surprise in store when headteacher of the Lavington Park Federation, Helen Martin, attended the Geography Association annual conference in Manchester.

For Mrs Martin, who has been head of the Federation of Duncton Junior and Graffham Infant schools for two years, was awarded the GA's award for excellence for her 'significant contribution' to the association's work.

Margaret Robert, president of the GA, paid tribute to Mrs Martin's 'inspiring, determined work as one of our recognised professional primary teachers'.

She said as well as being a busy headteacher, Mrs Martin had worked as a moderator for the Action Plan for Geography's Primary Geography Quality Mark, was an active member of the GA's primary committee and was one of the GA's trustees.

"With her enthusiasm and keen perception she has helped influence the content of both the Innovating with Geography website and the forthcoming Primary Curriculum Review," she said. "The association and the geography community as a whole owe her a considerable debt of gratitude."

Next month she takes over as chairman of the primary committee of the Geographical Association.

Back at school Mrs Martin said: "It was a complete surprise that my name appeared on the screen at the GA award ceremony."

"For the last year I have led an after-school Junior Geog-ers club with Duncton Junior School children: we have investigated our woodland, streams, the River Rother and our school grounds.

Most importantly the children have enjoyed learning outside, getting muddy and having fun!

"In the next year, we are developing our Forest Schools programme, using a piece of local forest kindly leant to us by Leconfield Estate.

This will enable children to learn about forests, make shelters and work collaboratively."
