A WEST Wittering chef has been won a competition to visit South Africa and help give a family a new start.

Elliott Courtney, 20, won a competition by Chichester salon Creations, to join it on a trip to the KwaZulu region of South Africa in October.

He will be joining six stylists, who have already broken their initial fundraising target of £13,500, to further the work of Coco’s Foundation and build a house for a family in the
Mduku village.

The final figure raised is £26,500, which gave Creations the funds to gift one place to a local teenager. The competition went out last month and the team
at Creations was inundated
with entries.

Emma Shepherd, manager of Creations and co-ordinator of the trip said: “Choosing the one person from outside of our team was such a difficult decision to make. We shortlisted and interviewed three people, and 20-year-old Elliott Courtney took first place. Elliott’s experience was mainly in building and labouring and he works as a chef in West Wittering, two skills that will be greatly appreciated on the trip in October.”

Elliott, who has just finished a course a Chichester College, said: “I can’t wait, it’s going to be absolutely brilliant. You would have to be stupid not to go for it.
I had to make sure I stuck out from everyone else.”

Elliott will be blogging live from his travels with the team.
