Spitfire pilot Brian Bird inspired visitors to Poppy Home Mais House to dig deep to support the Royal British Legion and its charity work.

The summer fair, which was opened by MP Greg Barker, raised £1,773.39, which manager Chris Turnbull was delighted by.

She described Brian, who is now 90 years old, as “amazing.”

Chris said: “Because it was the day after D-Day, Brian did a very good introduction to encourage people to put their hands in their pockets to fundraise for the Royal British Legion. It was a lovely speech he gave, also thanking the staff for all their hard work. It was really good. I am absolutely delighted, I think the fete was so well received by the Bexhill community, because not only did people come in but they stayed all afternoon, it was not just a case of popping in. It was a lovely afternoon, and I think my residents really enjoyed it.”
