A brand-new building dedicated to construction courses has opened at Chichester College.

Work began on the new block last autumn. It was opened on Friday by MP Andrew Tyrie who was also given a tour of the college.

The space will be used for construction courses, ranging from plumbing, brick work, carpentry, furniture making, painting and decorating.

“We are training people to take jobs and our local employers tell us that in some cases there is a clear shortage of appropriately qualified people,” said principal Shelagh Legrave.

She also thanked everyone who had been involved in the £10m project.

A spokesperson for the college said: “Construction staff and the maintenance team have endlessly worked hard to ensure the new build was ready for the student arrivals this month and their efforts have paid off.

“The facilities and equipment are top of the range, which means students can show off their skills and staff can create an excellent learning environment.”

The new building boasts four floors and each workshop has a pod where lecturers can observer their students learning new skills.
