New charges for disposing waste to be introduced this week

New charges and reduced opening times are just a few of the changes set to be introduced at Chichester and Bognor Regis' Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRSs) from Saturday (October 1).

This comes following a decision from the cabinet member for residents’ services in a bid to reduce spending.

The HWRSs at Westhampnett and Shripney will have their opening hours reduced to 10am to 8pm five days a week in the summer, and 10am to 5pm in the winter.

Eight of the 11 sites will have their opening days reduced, including Bognor Regis’ HWRS which will be closed on Thursdays and Fridays.

Other changes which will impact on the Chichester and Bognor service includes an introduction of a £4 charge for the disposal of non-household waste, such as soil, hard-core, DIY and plasterboard.

There will also be a £4 charge for the disposal of car or van tyres.

These changes have been made following feedback from 4,899 residents who took part in a four week public consultation, the comments of the Inter Authority Waste Group, district and borough and parish councils and the Environmental and Community Services Select Committee.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “I have made this decision carefully and considered all of the possible options before me.

“I have listened to the views of the public, with more people than ever before making their voices heard in a council consultation, and there was substantial understanding of the financial circumstances driving this.

“As a council we have to make savings, due to a shortfall in government funding, and this decision is the best option we have to make the £2 million a year savings needed.

“We are not closing any sites and are keeping them open at weekends, which our public consultation shows West Sussex residents wanted.”

David added: “Our Household Waste Recycling Sites will continue to be extremely well run and will still provide an effective, but more efficient, service.”
