A SPECIAL meeting of Chichester City Council has been called tonight (January 2) to elect the city’s new mayor.
Councillor John Hughes will be proposed and seconded.
The current deputy mayor will step up to the post early, following the decision of city councillor Alan Chaplin to step down for personal reasons from December 19.
The meeting will be held at 6pm in the council chamber at the Council House, in North Street.
The meeting is also set to authorise the payment of the residual amount of the mayor’s allowance to Cllr Hughes.
This dates from December 19 to the council’s annual meeting on May 14, 2014, when Cllr Chaplin’s tenure would have finished.
The meeting will see the ceremonial presentation of the mayor’s ring and the mayor’s snuff box.
Councillor David Siggs is also set to be proposed and seconded as the new deputy mayor and vice-chairman of the city council.
There will be a vote of thanks to Cllr Chaplin for his work as mayor.
