Observer Comment: Erasing a stink out and about around the town

DOG fouling in parts of Bexhill is so prevalent that pedestrians' progress often involves the eyes-down hunch of a bingo fan interspersed with the antics of a champion hop-scotcher or a trainee triple-jumper.

Walking from one end of a street to another without stepping in foul-smelling whirls of whoopsie can require the eyesight and agility of a cat: sadly something that many of Bexhill’s senior citizens simply do not possess.

But even the young and able are at risk of getting soiled, childish innocence or momentary distraction catching them out with consequences that are at best unpleasant and at worst downright hazardous.

For let’s not forget, dog poo may contain toxocara worms whose larvae can blind. A puppy can pass as many as 15,000 eggs per gram of faeces, each capable of surviving for up to three years.

Responsible dog owners accept that it is right and proper if exercising their pets in public that they should swiftly remove faeces. It is also the law.

But a minority couldn’t care less, and hence the state of our streets. Hopefully the growing chance that they will now get fined for their selfishness as police and council target offenders will make them clean up their act - and our parks and pavements.
