Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust raised more than £6,000 at its grand open weekend.

Darren Ashcroft, site manager at the trust, said around 600 people attended the event and they even ran out of cakes on the first day.

Luckily help was at hand and a good samaritan baked some more and brought them to the event on Sunday morning.

The open weekend included a furniture sale, plant sale, face painting, tombola and raffle, bric-a-brac, homemade cakes, a barbecue, book sale, crafts and a jumble sale.

Admission for the event was a donation or a tin of dog or cat food to feed the hedgehogs and birds.

Around 500 cans were collected, which should last them until their next event in November, the Christmas Fayre.

Mr Ashcroft said: “The weekend was successful and the donations and food will keep us going for a few months.

“The hedgehogs will eat dog food, and the gulls love the fishy cat food, so it’s been really good for us.”

Brent lodge can be found at Cow Lane in Sidlesham, PO20 7LN.
