DAWN GRACIE: So much hard work to achieve the magic

In my line of work, the phrase ‘It’s all smoke and mirrors’ is so very true.

To produce a successful show or event, there needs to be a degree of masking what is really going on behind the scenes in order to create a spectacular customer experience.

One definition of the phrase is ‘alludes to the way a magician uses optical illusion to create believability while performing a trick’ and even though I’m no Paul Daniels, the essence of the meaning rings so true for most of my work.

As many performers and event organisers will know, the months of planning, the many sleepless nights and mountains of paperwork, all culminate in putting on a show where the audience is to remain blissfully unaware of the metaphorical sticky tape and hairgrips holding it all together.

Stepping into the arena and presenting is without doubt a huge thrill and it’s easy to take all the credit, but I must make reference to the amazing team and performers who support me, ensuring all sticky tape and hairgrips are in the right place and keeping the coffee coming.

Things go wrong and rabbits need pulling out of hats on occasion, but it all comes together in the end. Now that’s magic!
