GAYLE DIXON: The invaluable chamber of commerce

MOVING to Chichester some six or so years ago, I found myself in a new city starting a new business.

I joined the Chichester Chamber of Commerce and found myself in a supportive community of business people, helping me to feel more connected to the city and its people.

I discovered that the chamber isn’t just a networking organisation.

Although the networking opportunities that it does provide are excellent, including monthly members meetings, speed networking’, regular breakfast meetings and social events, the chamber also provides a lot more than that and supports local businesses of all sizes in lots of different ways.

Representing chamber members is a vital part of their work.

By liaising with Chichester District Council, West Sussex County Council and other bodies, the chamber as an organisation can help influence key decisions that affect all of working lives.

It promotes Chichester and attracts business and tourism.

Furthermore, because of its standing and the esteem in which the chamber is held, it is often a preferred partner for different initiatives, such as the business support navigator which is a free service providing search and support to help your business find funding to grow.

The chamber of commerce also provides training opportunities to both members and non-members, with the latest being the bite-sized learning programme.

The training sessions are a short, sharp introduction or refresher on topics such as marketing made easy, effective selling and business development – a pleasure not a chore.

The current topic that is being run is called business finance made easy.

The sessions are run by chamber members who are recognised trainers and offer the most practical and relevant business training around.

The are also excellent value for money!

As both a member of the chamber with my own business and their administrator, I’m lucky to have the benefit of experiencing the chamber’s support for businesses from both sides.
