PLANS to keep council tax down and support parish councils will be debated at today’s meeting of Chichester District Council’s cabinet (July 9).
Councillors will be asked to authorise officers to prepared a draft 2014/15 council tax reduction scheme to be taken back to the council in December.
They will also be asked to agree that the principle of making a grant to parish councils, in connection with the council tax reduction scheme, be continued in 2014/15. However, the amount would be reduced in line with government grants to the council.
Last year, the district council gave a full central government grant to £194,000 to parish councils, topped up with £4,272, to prevent parish councils being worse off from tax changes.
The new universal credit system, being piloted in the north of England from October and due to rollout nationwide from April, 2014, will need to be taken into account in any new scheme.
