YOUNG Daniel Turner was helping to steer the city when he became junior mayor for the day.

He and junior councillors, Lydia Gilbertson, Esme Laflin and Olivia Jenkinson, who are pupils at Parklands Primary School, swapped their school uniforms for ceremonial robes and spent the day finding out about the role of the mayor and met people involved with some of the city’s most important businesses and services.

First stop was the Council Chamber where the mayor and his junior councillors robed up before heading off to the fire station in Northgate where they learned about fire prevention and safety.

The wonders of the universe were revealed to them at the Chichester Planetarium.

The pupils then enjoyed their sandwiches during a boat trip along Chichester Canal before heading off to Chichester Festival Theatre for a tour.

Back at school, the mayor and junior councillors helped plant two commemorative fruit trees.
