The West Sussex MP was policing minister from 2010-2012 and was a prominent figure in the EU referendum’s remain campaign as leader of Conservatives for Reform in Europe.

Mr Herbert, who is due to be awarded a CBE for ‘political and public service’, said: “I am delighted to have been awarded a CBE. It was a huge surprise to receive this news and it is a very great honour.

“I was proud to support David Cameron as Prime Minister in many causes, not least in securing equal marriage in this country.

“I certainly didn’t expect that I would be recognised in this way, and I feel humbled to be given such a special award.”

The resignation hours list reads: “Lately minister of state for police and criminal justice and chair of the All Party Group on Global TB and global LGBT rights.”

Mr Cameron has been heavily criticised for the list, which includes MPs, advisors, remain campaigners, and Tory Party donors.
