Andrew Tyrie, Tory MP for the area since 1997, announced he would not be standing for re-election this year.

Gillian Keegan, a Chichester district councillor, was then chosen by the Chichester Conservative Association as its candidate for the snap general election.

Back in 2015 Mr Tyrie had a majority of more than 25,000 votes, with more than 57 per cent of total votes cast.

Since Chichester is viewed as a safe Tory seat, Mrs Keegan is expected to be elected when the results are announced early tomorrow morning.

She would join Labour’s Laura Moffatt, Labour MP from 1997-2010, and Conservative Evelyn Emmett, who represented East Grinstead from 1955-65, as the only women elected to Parliament in West Sussex.
