Railway level crossing gates leave me cross
As someone who has recently moved into the City (Southern Gate) and who works north of the City, I find that four times out of five, I meet a closed level crossing.
I have officially complained to Rail Track (having daughter with baby and pram miss an aeroplane due to shut barriers) and they sent a bunch of pre-scripted platitudes about safety and the need to give the signalman discretion in keeping gates closed.
Sometimes they are closed for 10-15 minutes, while trains come from each direction. I sat last night for seven minutes until a three carriage production finally pulled in to the station (which means the train was up to five miles away, when the gate was shut). Yet Chichester is a bustling City for goodness sake! If you take the Rail Track argument to its logical conclusion, you could just shut the gates permanently – that's safe.
Come on chaps, let's get the City moving again - and I haven't even started on the adverse impact on shops and businesses...
