Mark Wright, who owns Hunters Lodge Riding Centre, says he and many others are especially delighted to see Option 2 thrown out.

Option 2 would have seen a new southern ‘Stockbridge link road’ built which would have sliced right through his 40 acre farmland.

Mr Wright said: “I’m really relieved because we have just been in limbo for months.

“I couldn’t divide up my fields because I didn’t know if it was worth it. “Trying to get any information was just impossible, we weren’t told anything.

“If Option 2 had gone through I’d probably have had to scale back and not had a livery on site and just concentrate on the riding school, but now at least they’ve scrapped the whole thing.”

The southern link road proposed as part of Option 2 caused particular anger amongst Donnington and Stockbridge residents because the new road would have run between them and over Chichester canal.

Asked if others were celebrating the scheme being axed, Mr Wright said: “Definitely. Not having access to the A27 from the Whyke and Stockbridge junctions annoyed a lot of people, and everyone heading to Bognor would have come straight through North Mundham.”

Transport secretary Chris Grayling scrapped the whole A27 scheme for Chichester last week blaming ‘the withdrawal of support by local councils for the shortlisted options and significant local campaigns’.

In response, plans have begun for the Chichester community to work together on its own scheme to take back to governmennt.
