School welcomes new footbridge proposals

The busy rail crossing at Fisbourne Road East

The busy rail crossing at Fisbourne Road East

OBSERVER readers have continued to react to news of a footbridge over a busy railway crossing.

Formal plans for a footbridge over the crossing in Fishbourne Road East have been submitted to Chichester District Council by Network Rail.

Councillors and teachers have largely welcomed the application, coming after more than a decade of revised plans and delays.

Some readers, however, have expressed concerns the bridge could become a focal point for anti-social behaviour and litter dropping.

Bishop Luffa School headteacher Nick Taunt said: “I am delighted at the news.

“The need to build a footbridge at this dangerous crossing has been recognised for many years. The team that conducted the official survey in 2006 anecdotally expressed their dismay at the inherent danger of the crossing’s layout. This footbridge will save lives.”

District councillor Clare Apel said she hoped the design would allow access and crossing for mobility scooters and prams but supported the idea ‘in essence’.

Network Rail was at the crossing yesterday and will be at the Assembly Rooms, in North Street, Fishbourne, today from 4pm-8pm.
