Sledgehammer attack on Chichester jewellery shop
A sledgehammer has been left in the shop window of a Chichester jewellers after it was burgled.
The outside of Ernest Jones in East Street was cordoned off by police this morning (Wednesday, February 15), as stunned shoppers took pictures of the scene.
The sledgehammer had caused a large amount of damage to one of the windows. Officers attended the jewellery shop shortly after 2.15am today, following a report that the shop had been broken into.
It is believed three men smashed the window of the shop, stole jewellery and then ran from the scene in an easterly direction along East Street before heading north into St Martins.
Detective Inspector Jim McKnight of West Sussex CID said: “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and saw three men acting suspiciously near to Ernest Jones or three men leaving the area carrying a holdall.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who is offered jewellery for sale.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 83 of 15/2 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
