A NEW solar farm could be on its way to Tangmere with plans to build on land at the airfield.
The application seeks to build on a field measuring approximately 11.26ha, which was formerly used by RAF Tangmere as an air base but has been vacant for a number of years.
Members from Your Energy Sussex, who lodged the application, met Tangmere parish councillors recently to outline the plans.
Parish clerk Greg Burt said: “They came before a meeting to tell us about it and answer questions to make sure councillors were informed with what’s going on which was helpful.” The site, which is mostly grassland, is located on the eastern edge of Tangmere, immediately east of Tangmere Airfield Nurseries, which is one of Europe’s largest pepper nurseries.
Your Energy Sussex is a West Sussex-led partnership of local authorities, which was formed ‘to improve energy efficiency in domestic and non-domestic properties, and promote renewable energy generation’.
It was set up in response to the government’s target for a major reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The applicant estimates the farm would have the potential to install energy saving measures for up to 680,000 households over the next 25 years.
The power generated would be sufficient to power at least 1,000 homes at a time, it said.
