THE Witterings’ annual charity paddle race caused a storm as always last weekend – raising £3,500 for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

The race is in its ninth year, and started out as a friendly rivalry between East and West Wittering’s surf clubs – Shore Surf Club and West Wittering Windsurf Club.

“The rivalry is still the same but now the effort from both clubs is raise as much money as they can for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust,” said event director Simon Bassett and owner of 2XS.

The 37 competitors took to the water on Sunday, July 28, on kayaks, paddle boards, surfboards and stand-up paddle boards (SUP).

The race started in East Wittering and ended at West Wittering, where there was a BBQ and after-party.

“There was a huge effort and a lot of local donations,” said Mr Bassett.

“All the money has gone into the Snowdrop Trust pot – but special thanks to Dales and Chipperfields who raised more than £1,000 on the barbecue with support from Kelly at East Wittering Co-op, Lorraine from Splits Bakery and Tony from Wallace’s Butchers.

“Chichester Music Academy brought 19 acoustic acts to the beach and played music all afternoon. West Wittering Windsurf Club, West Wittering Estate Lifeguards, and Shore Surf club all provided staff and volunteers. We are grateful to our other sponsors.”

“We have raised more than £3,450 for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust.”
