MEMBERS of Chichester District Council have today (January 9) backed objectors and said ‘no’ to 50 new homes in Bracklesham Bay.
Councillors sitting on the development control committee south voted 13 to one to turn down the scheme for land north east of Beech Avenue.
However, one of the reasons for refusal was called into question by officers meaning the decision will be referred to the planning application referral committee.
East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council had strongly objected to the plan.
Speaking at today’s meeting, parish council chairman said the development would only add to the problems created by an ‘already over-stretched infrastructure’.
Objectors said the development would lead to further congestion to roads leading off the peninsula, there were no jobs on the peninsula to support 50 new homes and raised concerns about flooding.
Backing objectors, Cllr Carol Purnell said: “Use those roads day-in-day-out and then see if you think this development would be sustainable.”
Councillors also raised concerns about land to the north of the site, also owned by developers Wates, and suggested 50 homes could be just the starting point.
A motion to refuse was put forward by councillor Peter Clementson and backed by councillors.
