Bomb disposal experts called to Westhampnett rubbish tip to examine a suspected toxic substance declared it safe, police have confirmed.
Police said officers were called at around 10.40am yesterday after a small amount of the unknown substance - believed to be vintage mustard gas - was left by a member of the public at the Stane Street depot.
An explosive ordnance disposal team arrived from Hampshire Police, cordon was put in place as a precaution and the area cleared until around 5.40pm, police said.
There were no reported injuries and the substance was eventually deemed safe, police added.
