The closure of Thursdays nightclub near Chichester, was met with shock on social media today (June 22).
The nightclub in Drayton Lane, Oving, made the sudden announcement on its Twitter feed this afternoon.
But many are asking whether the statement was merely a prank or publicity stunt.
A spokesman for Chichester District Council said it had no involvement in the closure, and its licensing department knew nothing about the move.
A spokesman for Thursday’s said the club did not wish to comment at this time.
The club tweeted: “As of now Thursdays Nightclub is now CLOSED.
“Thanks to all our customers that have made ts what it is.”
Asked why it had closed by customers, the club added: “nothin bad the landlords would like there building back sorry team ts customers.”
The news has received a mixed reaction across social media, with many lamenting the loss of the club - the only of its kind in the area - and others praising the closure.
Some people are calling for a Tiger Tiger nightclub to open in its place and others are calling for a club to open at Chichester Gate Leisure Park in Terminus Road.
Speaking on Facebook, Helen Christmas said: “Sad news, I remember Thursdays from my youth. Would be a good opportunity for some local entrepreneur to build a new club in one of those empty units at Chichester Gate.”
However Jess Osborne said: “breaking news?? Good anyway the place was a dump And now hopefully there be no more deaths at that train crossing..”
