FIREFIGHTERS are still at Beach Cafe, West Wittering, but the blaze is now out.
Crews were called at 8.12am today (Wednesday, October 22) when someone dialled 999 after the smoke alarm was activated.
Speaking at the scene, incident commander Marvin Smith said: “The first crew had quite a lot of smoke coming out of the rear of the building, predominantly looking like it was from the roof area.
“They had to force entry through the side to get to the back.
“We have got a fire that spread pretty much across the roof.
“Until we have cut away a bit more of it we won’t be able to tell how bad the damage is.”
Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly despite weather conditions working against them.
“We have been affected by the wind off the sea,” said incident commander Smith.
Firefighters from Chichester, Bognor, Selsey, Emsworth and Havant attended the scene.
Crews are still working to cut away damaged areas of the roof.
Thomas Barth runs the popular seafront cafe.
Speaking about the firefighters, he said: “The response time was fantastic, absolutely unbelievable.”
