A MAN has been released on bail after an alleged rape in North Bersted.

The 27-year-old local man has been released on police bail until August 8 to allow officers to conduct further enquires.

He was arrested on suspicion of rape yesterday (Tuesday, July 2) lunchtime.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman, who lives locally, is receiving expert medical treatment and support.

The alleged incident took place around 3am in the Chichester Road area on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Jim McKnight said: “Enquiries are at an early stage but we are already making progress. At present this is being treated as an isolated incident.
