A MISSING kayaker was unable to be located by rescue crews earlier this week.

Selsey inshore lifeboat Betty and Thomas Moore launched at 12:33pm on Wednesday (August 21), followed shortly after at 12:37pm by the all-weather boat Voluntary Worker to commence a search for a possible missing kayaker.

A small angling boat reported finding an unmanned kayak just outside The Hounds – a group of rocks approximately half a mile offshore from West Sands caravan park complex.

The search area took in most of Bracklesham Bay between the coastguard station at West Street, Selsey, and West Wittering out to three-and-a-half miles offshore.

The search involved both Selsey lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter and coastguard units ashore.

It took until 4.30pm to complete when, with nothing found, the search was called off.

A coastguard spokesman asked anyone who recognised the description of the boat and who may know the owner to call the coastguard on 999.
