VIDEO: East Wittering receives thankful village plaque

VILLAGERS in East Wittering welcomed some special guests yesterday (July 29), as the church received a memorial plaque for the first world war.

Two ex-servicemen Medwyn Parry and Dougie Bancroft decided to ride around the country to each of the thankful villages – those lucky enough for all their men to return from the conflict.

East Wittering is the only thankful village in Sussex.

With the centenary of the outbreak of the first world war next year, the pair decided to honour the 51 thankful villages with a plaque, as they have no official war memorial.

Last night ex-servicemen and villagers waited outside St Anne’s Church to meet their guests, who are motorcycling to all 51 villages in nine days.

The vicar received the memorial plaque, and the guests met ex-servicemen and girl guides from East Wittering village.

The ride will raise funds for the Royal British Legion - the target figure is £51,000.
