The Highways Agency has issued an amber road safety alert after high winds up to 70 mph were forecast.
The winds are expected from 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday, January 14) to Thursday morning.
The agency has urged motorists to drive with extra care and warned that coastal routes, bridges and exposed routes over high ground could see gusts up to 75 mph.
Road users driving high-sided vehicles, riding motorcycles or towing caravans are being urged to check traffic and weather conditions before setting out on journeys.
The Met Office has also published a yellow warning of snow and ice after showers of hail, sleet and snow were forecast for this evening (Tuesday, January 13).
Icy patches could form on untreated surfaces.
