A NEW and larger Co-op will open in East Wittering in summer 2015.
The Royal Oak pub and build a new modern supermarket in January.
Since then no work has yet gone ahead on the project.
But a Co-op spokeswoman said: “The Southern Co-operative store in East Wittering is planned to open next summer.
“Construction is anticipated to begin late 2014/early 2015 and as part of the planning requirement, we will be working with Chichester District Council and the local community to commission a piece of public art to go on the site.”
When the new Co-op store opens in the summer of 2015, the firm’s current supermarket in the village will close.
Staff will be moved over to the new larger store, and the Co-op said the move would create jobs.
The planning application was a source of contention in the village, and sparked a group called Save Our Village, which campaigned against the demolition of the historic pub.
