THERE were plenty of cheers when work officially started on the new hall at Compton and Upmarden CoE Primary School.

Ten years in the making, the project was launched by the Bishop of Horsham, the Rev Mark Sowerby, who led a special service in St Mary’s Church, supported by the Rev Dr John Strain and attended by pupils, parents, staff, governors, councillors and other members of the community.

Afterwards, everyone moved on to the school site where the bishop blessed the site and those present with holy water.

Head teacher Joan Burnett said she was delighted work had started after many years of hard work by the school, community and council.

Funding has been provided by the school, the Extended School’s Service, community fundraising and a donation from the Octagon Parish churches.

The new hall will be completed in June 2012 and will also include a kitchen and toilets.
