THE Observer has teamed up with Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner to give readers an exciting chance to quiz the force’s top brass.

Registration has now opened for West Sussex residents to have their say at the next Police and Crime Community Conversation, in Chichester on April 1.

County police and crime commissioner, Katy Bourne will host chief constable Giles York, new West Sussex divisional commander Steve Whitton and guest panellists from the local business community.

The public debate is being chaired by the Observer’s editor in chief, Gary Shipton, and will be held at the Chichester Assembly Rooms, The Council House, North Street, Chichester, on Wednesday, April 1, from 6.30pm to 8pm. Doors will open at 6pm.

Ahead of the meeting, we are asking for our readers to send us in their questions, which could well be hot topics for debate on the night.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mrs Bourne said: “I’m very grateful to the Observer for partnering with us to gather questions from readers and for encouraging local residents to join the community conversation.

“I have really enjoyed meeting members of the public and answering their questions at our last two events and I’m looking forward to meeting West Sussex residents on April 1 and taking part in another lively debate about local and national issues.

“Over 200 people have already attended our community conversations to have their say on a range of issues including drug use, the impact of police savings, road safety and street drinkers.

“I can promise a very frank, challenging and engaging evening in Chichester. By engaging with me and the police at these events residents are helping to inform policing priorities in Sussex.

“It’s also an opportunity for them to pose questions to their local police team.”

New West Sussex divisional commander, chief superintendent Steve Whitton, will attend on the night, taking over from chief superintendent Martin Walker, who retires in March after 30 years of service.

The panel will answer questions live, as well as those that have been submitted in advance.

Email questions in advance to stephen.pickthall@chiobserver.co.uk or by post at Suite 3 First Floor, City Gates, 2-4, Southgate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 8DJ.
