GOODWOOD has thrown its weight behind a road-safety campaign led by Singleton Primary School, to encourage people to slow down on the roads.
The school is asking drivers to be more careful with the help of car stickers which say ‘I am slowing down for a local child’.
Goodwood and Spirit FM are supporting the cause by sponsoring the stickers.
Christopher Todd, headteacher of Singleton Primary School, said: “We are really grateful to Goodwood and to Spirit FM for supporting this very important campaign. It would be wonderful if local drivers would get behind it too, by slowing down in Singleton and in the local area, where dangerous driving and excess speed can be a problem.”
The school is just off the busy A286 on Charlton Road.
Neighbouring West Dean Primary School recently ran a traffic-calming campaign after a speeding vehicle crashed into the school playground.
The campaign resulted in a stretch of road being reduced to a 30mph speed limit.
Janet Bradley, the spokeswoman for motorsport at Goodwood, explained why the circuit, which celebrates fast cars and high-speed driving, is supporting the campaign to encourage responsible driving.
“Goodwood is pleased to support this initiative by one of our local schools,” she said.
“Safety is paramount to everything we do, so we hope all visitors driving through Singleton and the local area will observe the sign and slow down for a local child.”
Sally Austin, managing director of the radio station Spirit FM, said: “We completely understand that the A286 is one of the main routes through the county, but it also goes through many small villages.
“We would much rather get involved and help to raise awareness of the damage speed can do before something happens – prevention is much better than cure.
“We’re extremely proud to serve our wonderful county and get involved with campaigns like this.”
The window sticker will be given to all schoolchildren in the local area and is also available for residents from Goodwood Farm Shop, Goodwood Motor Circuit Shop, the Weald and Downland Museum and the Gallery Tea Rooms in Singleton.
