I took my two sons to the Novium (Observer, February 21) last month and I was shocked, not only by the cost (I paid £12 for one adult and two children under ten), but also the unhelpful staff and the absence of anything particularly interesting inside the building.
The smartly-dressed but rather vinegary lady working at the till said that I could join for the whole year when I paid the steep entrance fee, but when I asked her if I could sign up for the annual membership after going round the museum, she told me I should have done this on entry.
Perhaps she realised Novium was, to paraphrase Dr Johnson, ‘worth seeing but not worth going to see’.
Nothing about the new museum made me want to bother visiting it again; where is all the information on Boxgrove Man?
The old museum offered friendly staff and well-curated displays – the new one provides neither.
