I HAVE just learnt about the threat of closure to the pedestrian and cycle path, Emperor Way, which passes just to the north of Fishbourne Palace.
I am a member of the cycling club CTC Portsmouth and we often use this path on our twice-weekly rides as a safe off-road route either on the way to Chichester or on the return leg back to Havant, normally calling in at the Palace cafe as a pleasant tea/coffee stop.
I find this threat of closure inexplicable. If security is a problem, then removing the regular passage of walkers and cyclist will only make the palace site more isolated and therefore more vulnerable to unwelcome visitors, and more secure fences and/or CCTV would probably solve or deter most of these.
The loss of customers to the cafe should also be a consideration. The loss of this amenity would not only be felt by our cycling club but also local community with whom we regularly share this path.
