CHICHESTER District Council electoral services have sent me a letter alerting me to changes in the electoral registration system, to which my details have been automatically amended.
You Don’t Have To Do Anything Else, it states (in bold type). Phew, that’s alright then.
But no, it’s not.
There are now two kinds of register: the Electoral Register which is used for electoral purposes and some legal purposes, eg crime detection, credit applications and jury service demands.
Then there’s the ‘Open’ Register.
Name and address details can be bought by any person, company or organisation for whatever profiteering motive. CDC is flogging our details for profit without our permission.
Your details (it says, in normal type near the end of the letter) will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed.
Of course I want them removed! But how do I do that? It doesn’t say.
You can find out more information, guess where, on the website, but even there, is info on how to opt out obvious? No.
The letter bids me adieu with the reassurance (in bold type) You Do Not Need To Take Further Action.
Oh yes I do.
If I don’t want my employee, Chichester District Council, to sell me down the river, I can try two phone numbers, one on the letter: 01243 521010 or on the website: 01243 534652 (office hours only).
